National Orthodontic Health Month and the start to the Holidays
Posted on 10/17/2019

October is National Orthodontic Health Month and Engstrom Orthodontics would like to share some helpful tips to keep your mouth and teeth healthy, especially during the Holiday season.

Halloween marks the beginning of the holidays and with those dates come a lot of eating.  Dr. Engstrom would like to share some tips to minimize breakage and emergency appointments.

Candy is OK!   The best types of candy are chocolates that are softer such as Reese Cups, plain chocolate bars, or Hersey Kisses.

Food that is harder to eat, but good for you:

  • Corn on the cob….just slice it off the cob and enjoy
  • Apples…..slice them into bite size pieces

Foods that should be avoided:

Nuts, Doritos, Popcorn, Ice, Carmel, Laffy Taffy, and Gum

The American Association of Orthodontists website also has great recipes, please visit:

for some great Halloween themed recipes that are braces-friendly!

We know it’s especially challenging around the holidays to follow the eating restrictions given to you by Dr Engstrom, however, it’s in your best interest to prevent broken wires and brackets and the need for emergency appointments.  However, if you do happen to need to see Dr. Engstrom, we are only a phone call away!

Happy National Orthodontic Health Month and……Halloween!!
