Girl smilingSurgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, corrects the abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty with chewing, talking, breathing, sleeping and other routine activities. Non-growing adult patients and adolescents with severe bite issues and skeletal discrepancies are candidates for surgical orthodontics.

Orthognathic surgery may have to be delayed in adolescent patients until growth is completed. During orthognathic surgery, the jaws are moved into the proper position, and the bite is corrected allowing the teeth to fit properly. Orthognathic surgery, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

Typically, you will have to undergo orthodontic treatment for 6-12 months before orthognathic surgery. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon will then perform the surgery in a hospital setting or surgical suite. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes several hours to complete. Contrary to common belief, the jaws are not wired together after surgery and surgical recovery time is about two weeks. We start the finishing stages of orthodontic treatment about 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Dr. Engstrom will cover all treatment options (surgical and non-surgical), highlighting the pros and cons of both approaches. You can then make an educated decision about the treatment plan that best fits you.
